Learning in the heart of European Agriculture: Almería

When I came from Chile to Europe to enroll in the Master in International Agribusiness Management (MIAM), I had a lot of expectations and I can assure that when I arrived in Almería, those expectations were surpassed. Once I was here,  I realised the importance of the agriculture in this region and I could notice the commitment that everyone has within this industry.

As a MIAM student, visiting agricultural companies in Almeria was a transformative experience that greatly enhanced my professional and personal development. The first-hand exposure to the diverse operations of these companies provided a unique understanding of the complexities and challenges of the agricultural industry.

During the visits, I had the opportunity to interact with top executives, engineers, and farmers who shared their insights and experiences with us. This helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the practicalities involved in managing an agricultural business, such as the importance of innovation, sustainability, and risk management.

Also, in these visits we are able to get insights on every stage of the value chain, from seeds and nurseries, to growers and farmers, auxiliary industry and exporters. This has allowed me to have a real perspective about all the processes and to be aware about all the effort that is behind any supermarket fruit or vegetable.

In every visit, we also have the opportunity to see how these companies adapt to changes in the global market, and overcome the challenges of meeting consumer demand while maintaining product quality and safety. Regarding all the certifications that are needed to commercialise your products in the international market, these visit-lessons were invaluable and have broadened my perspective on the role of agriculture in our planet.

On the other hand, thanks to all the exposure that this MBA gives us, I have developed a great network that will give me the opportunity to develop different kind of business and to have a good support in terms of advice when making decisions in the near future.

Overall, this experience has given me valuable knowledge and it it has helped me to develop skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making, which are essential for success in the fast-paced and dynamic world of agri-business. I am grateful for the opportunity to have had this experience and I look forward to applying what I have learned in my future endeavours.
